All foreign nationals require visa to enter India. Types of visa and fee are detailed below. Tourist visas are issued for one month, six months or five years. Tourist visas can be extended by three months at the foreigner's registration office in New Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta and Chennai, or, with the Superintendent of Police at any District Headquarters. Four passport size photographs are needed for obtaining a visa.
If stay in the country exceeds 180 days, then tourists are required to get a tax clearance certificate, available at the foreigner's section of the income tax department in every major city. It is also advisable to keep bank receipts to show that the money has been changed legally.
Special permits may be required additionally with the visa to visit certain areas of the country. Areas such as parts of Sikkim and the north-east frontier states, north-east of Himachal Pradesh near the Tibetan border, are out of bounds for foreign nationals. Instructions Tourist Visa - India Visa Requirements
A Tourist Visa is given to those visiting India for tourism or other non-business related purposes. Valid for 6 months to 10 years. Ten (10) year visa is available only to US citizens under a bilateral arrangement. Irrespective of the duration of validity of visa, on each visit maximum period of stay in India is limited to 6 months (180 days). Multiple entry visas are given. Please note the visa is valid beginning on the day it is issued. So a 6 Month visa issued on January 1 would be valid until June 30.
Application: Complete the online India Visa Application at https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/get-a-visa. After the application has been completed, you must print and sign the application.
Passport: Passport must have a minimum validity of six months from the date of application with at least two blank visa pages. Last 2 amendment pages are not acceptable. Must be the actual passport not a copy.
Photographs: Photographs: 2 latest identical passport size photographs (black/white or color) depicting front pose against light background on photographic paper.
Proof of Address: You must apply in the jurisdiction of your residence. Applicants must submit a photocopy with proof of residence/address that matches the address on the visa application exactly. Photocopy of driver license or utility bill such as gas, water or electric must be submitted. Address proof that contains P.O. boxes will not be accepted. If you don't bring a copy, they will make a photocopy for you for $2.00.
How to Apply in Person
Go to the link https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/requirements/gather?apply=inperson. You'll need to bring your documents and your completed, printed application form to our local office for your area Monday - Friday between the hours of 9:00am - 12:00pm or 2:00pm - 4:00pm. Document pickup is available from 4:30pm - 6:00pm.Same Day Visas
Same day visa applications must be submitted in person to the Outsourcing Office between 9:00am and 11:00am (you will need an appointment that is selected at the end of the online application form). Pickup for same day applications is usually between 5:30pm and 6:00 pm. Note that they do not guarantee the visa will be issued same day. Non-US citizens and US citizens who require a reference have a processing time of 4-6 working days. Applications received after 11:00am will have the visa issued the following working day for non-reference cases.
It is recommended to consider applying by mail, which is extremely safe and is the most convenient method.
How to Apply by Mail
Complete the application form using the link https://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/requirements/gather?apply=bymail and send the completed, printed application and your other required documents via a trackable method such as: FedEx, UPS, or registered mail.
Once they receive your documents they will send you an email receipt with a personalized link to use throughout the process. Applications sent by mail take about 3 to 5 working/business days to process from the date of receipt.
Requirements for Various Cases
For minors, a parent or guardian proof of address from both parents may be submitted instead.
Green Card Holders: Applicants who are not Citizens of USA, but hold long term US visa or a Green Card should submit a copy of the visa or the Green Card. Do not send the original Permanent Residence Card/Green Card. Travisa Outsourcing cannot be held responsible for loss or damage to original Permanent Residence Card/Green Card (Non US Citizens - Permanent Resident/Green Card Holders Only)
Short Term Visa Holders: Applicants who are not citizens/residents of the USA and hold a tourist or other short-term visa for the USA should normally apply for Indian visas in the country of their permanent residence. In case of emergency or special circumstance, an application could be made at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC or Consulates General of India in the USA. In addition to the relevant visa fee there is a reference fee of $20.00 for reference to be made to the country of their original residence. The processing time in such cases is usually 5-7 working days. (Non US Citizens - Short Term Visa Holders Only)
Special Pakistan Application: In addition to the requirements above, Special Visa application form (http://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/pdf/Pakistan.pdf) should be filled in by citizens of Pakistan (4 copies with 4 photos). (Pakistan Citizens Only)
Special Bangladesh Application: In addition to the requirements above, Special Visa application form (http://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/pdf/Bangladesh.pdf) should be filled in by citizens of Bangladesh (2 copies with 2 photos). (Bangladesh Citizens Only)
Persons of Indian Origin: Applicants born in India applying for the first time on ANY U.S. passport must submit their Indian passport and a completed renunciation form (http://indiavisa.travisaoutsourcing.com/pdf/renunciation.pdf) OR submit their expired US passport with a previously issued Indian visa if applicable. (United States Citizens Only)
Dual Citizenship: Applicants who have dual citizenship with the US and another country must apply on their US passport if living in the US. (Non US Citizens Only)
Processing Time: Same day visa applications must be submitted in person to the Outsourcing Office between 9:00am and 11:00am (you will need an appointment that is selected at the end of the online application form). Fees:
Note: Since consular fees are fixed on the basis of reciprocal arrangement/or special agreements between governments, the fees could differ for citizens of different countries. Consular fee once received is not refunded even if the visa application is withdrawn or visa not granted.
A Processing Service Fee of $13.00 will be collected by Travisa Outsourcing per application, per passport. All fees are payable by Money Order (preferred payment method - payable to "Travisa Outsourcing") or Credit Card - payment with Credit Card may cause a delay (Visa and MasterCard only). The current schedule of consular fees includes the $13.00 service fee collected by Travisa Outsourcing is given below.
Applicants needing a Protected Area Permit (PAP) will need to pay an extra $30.00 in addition to the consular fee.
All Consular Fees and Processing Fees are NONREFUNDABLE, even if a visa is denied or if a visa is issued for a shorter period of time or otherwise issued or returned at a time or on terms and conditions that vary from those sought by the applicant.

Please note that US short term visa holders will be charged a reference fee of $20.00 in addition to the total fees below. US Green card holders and those who have a US long term visa (3 years or more) will not be charged the reference fee. Applicants with nationalities including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran, China, Slovak Republic and Czech Republic will be required to pay the reference fee of $20.00 regardless of green card or US long term visa status. In cases where prior reference is required, the processing time is usually is 4-6 working days.
Please note that it is strongly recommended that Non-US Citizens apply for the shortest duration available.
